Stood at 3,500 meters on Plateau Rosà, one of the most notable white balconies of the Alps, you can view the Matterhorn, which despite its 4,478 meters in height, from this “terrace” it seems as you are almost able to touch it. You can see Mont Blanc at 4810m, Monte Rosaat 4.633m, from the Gran Paradiso at 4.061m, right across the mountains of Piedmonte. And in the distance, the unmistakable legendary mountain of Monviso at 3.841m, more known to most as the logo of Paramount Pictures it’s locally rumoured. Locally to Savoie and Switzerland, the peaks of the Eiger at 3.970m and Jungfrau at 4.158m. Some amazing runs await you at Cervinia; from Plateau Rosa, there is an 11km run ending in Cervinia that in just one run will tire the legs of the less well trained. Nearby Valtournenche is nearby and connected with the “Goillet” chairlift. A camera is very much recommended.
Plateau Rosà is the most well-known gateway at Cervinia and accesses the Swiss Zermatt district. A bit of local history for you: since the mid-sixteenth century the Colle del Theodulo was used by the inhabitants of Valtournenche to trade with their Swiss neighbours, passing right where there are now the ski slopes to reach the main cities of Valais. Be sure not to pass with anything illegal now though as Swiss customs are present on the mountaintop and will have no qualms about strip-searching those they suspect of carrying contraband across the border.
